  24.             FAST is a prototype, automated  broker  for  standard,  off-
  25.             the-shelf  items.   Electronic  and  optical  parts and com-
  26.             ponents and laboratory and test equipment are  readily  pur-
  27.             chased through the FAST service.

  29.             FAST is ONEstop shopping.  It is a complete value-added ser-
  30.             vice that handles quoting, ordering, expediting and returns.
  31.             One purchase order with FAST  allows  customers  to  acquire
  32.             items easily and quickly from a very large vendor base.

  34.             The FAST broker currently serves more than  100  university,
  35.             commercial  and  government  customers.  As of June 1992, it
  36.             had acquired items from over 1,500 suppliers.

  38.             FAST's customers request quotes and place orders  from  FAST
  39.             via EDI (Electronic Data Interchange - standard email or EDI
  40.             X12).  FAST sources (often in  a  fully  automated  fashion)
  41.             incoming  rfqs  and  redistributes them to vendors who carry
  42.             the requested items.

  44.             FAST communicates with its vendors using EDI (standard email
  45.             or  EDI  X12) or fax.  All vendor responses are collected by
  46.             FAST and sent back to the customers via EDI.  The  customers
  47.             pick  the  best quote/item and place the order from FAST via
  48.             EDI.  FAST sends EDI orders for the items  to  the  vendors.
  49.             The vendors invoice FAST and customers reimburse FAST.

  67.             FAST also offers a one-step  quote-and-order  option,  where
  68.             the  customer  specifies what selection criteria FAST should
  69.             use when evaluating  incoming  vendor  quotes.   The  "best"
  70.             quote is then automatically turned into an order by FAST.

  72.             Customers are charged an 8% service fee (8% of the  cost  of
  73.             the merchandise acquired through FAST) for the service.

  78.             (FAST@ISI.EDU) or via EDI X12 over any commercial VAN (Value
